The team have vast experience in the TV & Film Industry and are supported by shark scientists from around the world.
Meet the key members that have made the Be Gentle to Giants
project come to life.
Creative Director - Pinky Productions
Pinky is our producer, editor and head of post production. Pinky started working with Rich on this project in 2017. Through many skype calls (now the dreaded Zoom) emails and a lot of hustling they got this project off the ground.
But, this couldn't of become what it has without Chris, who agreed to 6 weeks unpaid filming in the Maldives in return for as much 5 star diving and 5 star dining as he wanted.
(Tough gig!)
Pinky heads up Pinky Productions.
A team of hugely talented individuals that have worked across all sectors, creating stunning promos, television
commercials and documentaries.
The team have worked around the world in over 60 countries, they are highly experienced at what they do.
Pinky lives in North Devon, UK and has a huge passion for the ocean, wildlife and the great outdoors.
Chris Scarffe is our director and principle cameraman on this project. Chris is an award-winning independent environmental filmmaker, specialising in the fields of wildlife, conservation and education. With over 15 years of creative experience, Chris works with broadcasters and charitable organisations around the world to produce beautiful, powerful and captivating material for a broad range of environmental issues.
Chris has a wealth of experience filming sharks for HBO, Shark Week and the BBC amongst others. He also filmed on land, underwater and from the air for the BBC Earth documentary ‘The Octopus In My House’ , which won the prestigious Best Animal Behaviour Film at Jackson Wild 2020 – the natural history films’ equivalent to the Oscars.
Richard has 14 years experience working in marine research, conservation and wildlife tourism & is passionate about innovative, stakeholder-led approaches that benefit the marine environment and coastal communities. He is co-founder of the charity Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme, Critter; A citizen science platform which uses mobile technology to increase participation in marine research and Celtic Deep, an offshore wildlife tour company in his home country of Wales.
The Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) is a charity that carries out whale shark research and fosters community focused conservation initiatives in the Maldives. Through surveys and an innovative citizen science platform the MWSRP have documented over 7000 whale shark encounters. Their data has contributed to creation of SAMPA, the largest Marine Protected Area in the Maldives. SAMPA is still a work in progress and a lack of management and enforcement has shaped the research outreach goals of MWSRP.
Richard's experiences of working in the Maldives alongside tourist operators, has informed the tourist-empowering approach of Be Gentle to Giants.

With its distinctive spots and stripes and enormous size, the whale shark is a majestic and unmistakeable creature.
Our enthusiasm for swimming with these creatures has far exceeded our awareness of how to do so responsibly.
So, how should you swim with whale sharks?
